propaganda techniques

Assertion:
Assertion is commonly used in advertising and modern propaganda. An assertion is an enthusiastic or energetic statement presented as a fact, although it is not necessarily true. They often imply that the statement requires no explanation or back up, but that it should merely be accepted without question. Examples of assertion, although somewhat scarce in wartime propaganda, can be found often in modern advertising propaganda. Any time an advertiser states that their product is the best without providing evidence for this, they are using an assertion. The subject, ideally, should simply agree to the statement without searching for additional information or reasoning. Assertions, although usually simple to spot, are often dangerous forms of propaganda because they often include falsehoods or lies.
Examples: Head and Shoulder shampoo commercials
                   Unique toothpaste
                   Champion detergent
Bandwagon:
Bandwagon is one of the most common techniques in both wartime and peacetime and plays an important part in modern advertising. Bandwagon is also one of the seven main propaganda techniques identified by the Institute for Propaganda Analysis in 1938. Bandwagon is an appeal to the subject to follow the crowd, to join in because others are doing so as well. Bandwagon propaganda is, essentially, trying to convince the subject that one side is the winning side, because more people have joined it. The subject is meant to believe that since so many people have joined, that victory is inevitable and defeat impossible. Since the average person always wants to be on the winning side, he or she is compelled to join in. However, in modern propaganda, bandwagon has taken a new twist. The subject is to be convinced by the propaganda that since everyone else is doing it, they will be left out if they do not. This is, effectively, the opposite of the other type of bandwagon, but usually provokes the same results. Subjects of bandwagon are compelled to join in because everyone else is doing so as well. When confronted with bandwagon propaganda, we should weigh the pros and cons of joining in independently from the amount of people who have already joined, and, as with most types of propaganda, we should seek more information.
Example: Lactum
                 Pantene shampoo
                 TM sim card

Card stacking:
Card stacking, or selective omission, is one of the seven techniques identified by the IPA, or Institute for Propaganda Analysis. It involves only presenting information that is positive to an idea or proposal and omitting information contrary to it. Card stacking is used in almost all forms of propaganda, and is extremely effective in convincing the public. Although the majority of information presented by the card stacking approach is true, it is dangerous because it omits important information. The best way to deal with card stacking is to get more information.
Example: Nido
                  Memo plus Gold
                  Multivitamins

Glittering Generalities:
Glittering generalities was one of the seven main propaganda techniques identified by the Institute for Propaganda Analysis in 1938. It also occurs very often in politics and political propaganda. Glittering generalities are words that have different positive meaning for individual subjects, but are linked to highly valued concepts. When these words are used, they demand approval without thinking, simply because such an important concept is involved. For example, when a person is asked to do something in "defense of democracy" they are more likely to agree. The concept of democracy has a positive connotation to them because it is linked to a concept that they value. Words often used as glittering generalities are honor, glory, love of country, and especially in the United States, freedom. When coming across with glittering generalities, we should especially consider the merits of the idea itself when separated from specific words.
Example: election campaign like: Manny Villar, Ninoy Aquino etc.

Lesser of Two Evils:
The "lesser of two evils" technique tries to convince us of an idea or proposal by presenting it as the least offensive option. This technique is often implemented during wartime to convince people of the need for sacrifices or to justify difficult decisions. This technique is often accompanied by adding blame on an enemy country or political group. One idea or proposal is often depicted as one of the only options or paths. When confronted with this technique, the subject should consider the value of any proposal independently of those it is being compared with.
Example: Tide detergent commercials
                  Joy dishwashing liquid

Name Calling:
Name calling occurs often in politics and wartime scenarios, but very seldom in advertising. It is another of the seven main techniques designated by the Institute for Propaganda Analysis. It is the use of derogatory language or words that carry a negative connotation when describing an enemy. The propaganda attempts to arouse prejudice among the public by labeling the target something that the public dislikes. Often, name calling is employed using sarcasm and ridicule, and shows up often in political cartoons or writings. When examining name calling propaganda, we should attempt to separate our feelings about the name and our feelings about the actual idea or proposal.
Example: politics commercial like in election campaigns:
                  Manny Villar
Pinpointing the Enemy:
Pinpointing the enemy is used extremely often during wartime, and also in political campaigns and debates. This is an attempt to simplify a complex situation by presenting one specific group or person as the enemy. Although there may be other factors involved the subject is urged to simply view the situation in terms of clear-cut right and wrong. When coming in contact with this technique, the subject should attempt to consider all other factors tied into the situation. As with almost all propaganda techniques, the subject should attempt to find more information on the topic. An informed person is much less susceptible to this sort of propaganda.
Plain Folks:
The plain folks propaganda technique was another of the seven main techniques identified by the IPA, or Institute for Propaganda Analysis. The plain folks device is an attempt by the propagandist to convince the public that his views reflect those of the common person and that they are also working for the benefit of the common person. The propagandist will often attempt to use the accent of a specific audience as well as using specific idioms or jokes. Also, the propagandist, especially during speeches, may attempt to increase the illusion through imperfect pronunciation, stuttering, and a more limited vocabulary. Errors such as these help add to the impression of sincerity and spontaneity. This technique is usually most effective when used with glittering generalities, in an attempt to convince the public that the propagandist views about highly valued ideas are similar to their own and therefore more valid. When confronted by this type of propaganda, the subject should consider the proposals and ideas separately from the personality of the presenter.
Example: Manny Villar’s Campaign commercials
Simplification (Stereotyping):
Simplification is extremely similar to pinpointing the enemy, in that it often reduces a complex situation to a clear-cut choice involving good and evil. This technique is often useful in swaying uneducated audiences. When faced with simplification, it is often useful to examine other factors and pieces of the proposal or idea, and, as with all other forms of propaganda, it is essential to get more information.

Testimonials:
Testimonials are another of the seven main forms of propaganda identified by the Institute for Propaganda Analysis. Testimonials are quotations or endorsements, in or out of context, which attempt to connect a famous or respectable person with a product or item. Testimonials are very closely connected to the transfer technique, in that an attempt is made to connect an agreeable person to another item. Testimonials are often used in advertising and political campaigns. When coming across testimonials, the subject should consider the merits of the item or proposal independently of the person of organization giving the testimonial.
Example: Sarah Geronimo’s Commercials (Sunsilk shampoo)
                  Sharon Cuneta’s Lucky Me
Transfer:
Transfer is another of the seven main propaganda terms first used by the Institute for Propaganda Analysis in 1938. Transfer is often used in politics and during wartime. It is an attempt to make the subject view a certain item in the same way as they view another item, to link the two in the subjects mind. Although this technique is often used to transfer negative feelings for one object to another, it can also be used in positive ways. By linking an item to something the subject respects or enjoys, positive feelings can be generated for it. However, in politics, transfer is most often used to transfer blame or bad feelings from one politician to another of his friends or party members, or even to the party itself. When confronted with propaganda using the transfer technique, we should question the merits or problems of the proposal or idea independently of convictions about other objects or proposals.

TWO GOLDEN ARCHES(revised)

Two Golden Arches
Seeing those golden arches in front of McDonalds, makes people feel twinge of starvation and imagine of their hamburgers and fries. The smell of their delicious meals catches nose, makes feet lift up from the ground then fly to that place of hunger.
When costumer enters through their glass door, there is always a security guard that is ensuring of the safety of area and all the people inside the restaurant. They will politely greet and will let you in calmly.  Sensing the different smell of their delicious food from their cooking area will make you order faster as it is. Going to the line to order, a service crew will assist you for your order so that the service will be faster. That employee has a sheet of paper and will ask the costumer what his/her order is. That sheet of paper will be given to costumer. Then, reaching the cashier’s corner, just give the paper where your order is written and just wait for a few minutes, your order will be served. The angel-like face of all employees, their voices, their sweet smiles will make you calm, and the words that are coming out from their mouth will make costumers go back again.
At last, the band that is making noise from your stomach will become a choir from a peaceful and mild church after you eat. I usually order a hamburger, large fries, chicken fillet and the dessert that will always in my table, the McFlurry Cadbury ice cream.it is so delectable, scrumptious and luscious that makes me feel like in a paradise. Their food is not just delicious but also fresh.
Even they have always lots of customers, they always have a time for each of their consumers. Before you have a meal, service crews in the restaurant will make sure that the table is clean then they will ask if they still have something to do. After eating my meal, I would like to order again, but my stomach is shouting: no, stop, stop. So I would eagerly stand and be thankful of what I have eaten that save me from hunger. Before you will go outside from that place for hunger, here again the security guard will give you smile and politely will say “Come again.”
It is so nice to go out from a place without regret, instead you will feel contented and blissful as you are.

A SILENT AND NON-MOVING PET(pet analogy)

A SILENT and NON-MOVING PET
What is the difference between me and my little baby Lyle? Baby Lyle has a cottony soft yellow skin while I have a skin of an ordinary individual. He doesn’t talk dissimilar to my mouth that is similar to a shotgun. He doesn’t move unlike me, I walk, step, hop, run, dance and any move that I wanted to. He has a stuffed toy structure while I have a human structure similar to a normal being. Simply, he is just a normal and non-moving stuffed toy, in contrast, I breathe that gives me life.
What is in common between me and Baby Lyle? We are both loyal. We do not stick at anyone but just stick to one. He is always stay calm and do not panic. I also have that characteristic. I focus on what should I do, not on the situation that is happening. Well last similarity is that he is so cute just like his boss.

A SILENT and NON-MOVING PET
Living in this world without someone special or a friend is like lying in a dark and narrow coffin. It is better to die than having a breath without someone to talk to, to play with and to share feelings or problems. It is not a problem for being unfriendly to people, not confident with other people there is a pet that can be loyal and true friend. It is probably 100% sure that it will not be a traitor nor causes tears to fall unless that pet will disappear. It will love its boss as much as the boss loves his/her pet too.
It is my 7th birthday when my father gave me present. When I opened it, it had a cute, yellow and soft skin structure. That stuff is my first and only pet. Baby Lyle was the name that I gave to him which is related to my best friend in province. I gave him the care that he deserves as he gave it also to me. I always make sure that he is clean and has a good and pleasant odour. He is so kind, silent and not hard headed. He doesn’t even disturb me when I am doing something. He is just quite near and just watching me.
As my clock alarmed, my eyes would open seeing my dearest pet besides my pillow staring at me.” Come here little buddy,” I said but no respond. “Come here baby Lyle,” calling his name but nothing happened. So I decided to take him with my hand. Looking at his non moving eyes, kissing his invisible nose, lifting and throwing him into the air is our favourite and only bonding time together.
“Catch this little fella,” I throw something and assuming that he is running to catch that thing like what an ordinary dog is doing but he disappointed me. He’s still at my side doing nothing and just staring at me. I kept on asking myself, “What animal is this?” he doesn’t sound like a dog because he is not barking nor even a cat with the  “meow, meow,” or a bird with the “tweet, tweet.” He had no sound and a voice neither because he is just a silent and non-moving stuffed toy that for me is a pet and a good friend for me.scvganzon@gmail.com

A PARADISE LIKE

Berdan, Ma. Nerieza B.                                                                                                 Descriptive: My Favourite Place
A Paradise Like
I grew up to a smelly fishlike barangay in Tacloban, Leyte. Even my life now is touched and is built inside the urbanized, civilized, and noisy town; I do still remember the place where I formed. There is a place that I always go to every time we visit our hometown. It makes my heart burst and makes my face gloomy when I hear the noise that is created by vehicles in the roads, vendors in the streets and smell the populated air. I will just realize that I am already backing in Metro Manila.
I am far more distant but I could already smell the fresh water and hear the waves from that wide and eternal ocean. I could feel the touch of the spiritually and fairly air made by trees as I walk on my path.  I always go to the very end of the long, wooden and zigzag dock. There, I feel comfortable and safe from sun and rain because there is something that shades me. I find myself standing there and spend my free time remembering memories. My lips will slightly be straightened when a happy memory comes to my mind and sometimes bad memories also arrive that definitely makes my tears fall. From that position, I am surely close to the sea because of the fresh and salty air from that large body of water that embraces and dancing with me. My face could feel the very strong wind that could make my hair lost. I could sense the smoke from a very far corner that makes my stomach feel hunger. It goes straight to my nose that always caught my attention to go there.  I could whiff lots of barbeque store that is queued. It satisfies my taste because of a delicious and affordable food.
Staying to a peace and peerless place is a simple thing that I could do to bring out my feelings. It is hard to escape from the place that will give you sympathy and feel you calm, never leaves you and will wait for you no matter how far you are and how long would it take.

INCOMPLETE PUZZLE

2011-79307                                                                                                                               WFW
Ma. Nerieza B. Berdan                                                        Narrative: Most Memorable Christmas
Incomplete Puzzle
Christmas tree, Christmas lights, and Christmas gifts are some of those things that make us remember of season. It never ends. If we believe on it, we will feel the happiness, contentment and love. Those are the only reason why this time of year exists. It is the birth of our beloved Christ and He saved us because of the big and hot fire from His heart. So let this huge flame be in our soul always.
There is just one thing I am hoping for every time Christmas is coming, and that is a complete family. I could not yet say that Christmas for me is merry. There is no glint in my stars and all of the angels from heaven are blubbering. All the trees are yellow and all that I see is gray. I can’t see the light, there is one piece of my puzzle is missing. Oh mother, where are you?   I could not sense her during Noche Buena. No gifts from her that touches my hand, no hug from her and no kiss from her lips and will say, “Merry Christmas my lovely daughter, I love you.”
In the year 2012, I saw a lady that is so familiar to my heart. She is the most important lady of my life, my one and only mother. Christmas 2012 is the most memorable Christmas for an abandoned child like me. At last I celebrated the season with her. I don’t care about the present as long as my protector is at my side.
I and my mother both went to market to buy some ingredients for food that will be put in our table for Noche Buena. We merrily went to mall to shop some decorations like Christmas lights; balls and also dresses for us. We also went to beauty salon and spa to have some relaxed time. The scissors cut our hair, the cream massaged our face and lastly the foot spa tickled our feet. That is really a memorable bonding for me with my mother. We hardly decorated our house and cooked the food that had magic by our hands. My mother, brother and sister prepared ourselves for the coming of the son of God and had a countdown when the time is already near and altogether shouted “Merry Christmas.” That is very memorable and unforgettable season of mine. But wait my puzzle is still not completed. My father is not in his chair. I need him. When is the day that I will celebrate Christmas with my mother and father and not each of them?
Once a child completed the puzzle that he/she is solving, that child has nothing to do but to be happy. So as a child with an incomplete family, that kid will keep on finding the lost one either his/her mother or father. No happiness that can be equalize to the happiness that they will feel if their family will be complete.  A complete family is a complete personality.scvganzon@gmail.com
